SkyLink, formerly known as the Automated People Mover, is Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) forthcoming electric train that will provide time-certain access to its terminals, parking and pickup and drop-off curbs, in addition to connecting guests and employees to Los Angeles’ regional transportation system across light rail and municipal bus lines.

SkyLink features a 2.25-mile elevated guideway with six stations – three inside the Central Terminal Area (CTA) and three outside the of it. Stations outside of the CTA will serve LAX Economy Parking and the adjacent Ground Transport Center; the LAX/Metro Transit Center and LAX’s own Transit Center; and the LAX Rental Car Center (RCC). SkyLink will operate 24/7 and will be free for ticketed passengers, airport employees, and those picking up and dropping off travelers.

During the peak hours of 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., nine four-car sets will operate, with each set capable of carrying up to 200 passengers and their luggage. Trains will arrive at stations every 2 minutes during peak hours with a total travel time of 10 minutes end-to-end (from the RCC to the West CTA Station), with top speeds of 47 miles per hour. For ease of access, SkyLink trains will have large, wide doors with level boarding, and 12 seats in each car.

Approximately 30 million passengers per year are anticipated to use SkyLink, with an estimated result of more than 42 million fewer vehicle miles traveled annually. In addition to reducing traffic, SkyLink will leverage cutting-edge sustainability practices to reduce the airport area’s carbon footprint. The system’s fleet will consist of 44 cars that are fully electric and made from 98% recyclable materials. The train will produce a portion of its power through regenerative braking while providing industry-leading ride quality for users. The system’s Maintenance and Storage Facility will generate nearly half of its power from solar energy.

SkyLink is a historic investment in Los Angeles’ emerging businesses and workforce. More than $1.04 billion in contracts have been paid to local, diverse, small and veteran-owned businesses and more than $638 million has been paid in wages to local workers. The project’s construction has created nearly 10,000 jobs, with 30% of roles reserved for residents of communities near LAX and greater Los Angeles. During the project’s initial Operations and Maintenance Phase (roughly 23 years) 60% of jobs will be performed by local workers.
